What It Is

The part of the mushroom that counts

Hericium erinaceus — Lion’s Mane — is a white, shaggy mushroom that grows on hardwood and looks rather like its name suggests. It has a long history of culinary and traditional use across East Asia, and it has become one of the most talked-about functional mushrooms of the last decade.

Fruiting body, not mycelium on grain

This is the distinction worth understanding before you buy any Lion’s Mane product. Many cheap supplements are made from mycelium grown on a grain substrate, and the grain is milled into the finished powder. That inflates the weight on the label with material that is mostly starch.

Ours is made from the fruiting body — the mushroom itself, the part you would recognise if you found it growing. It is prepared as a 10:1 extract, meaning ten parts raw mushroom are concentrated into one part extract.

Questions

Lion’s Mane questions

What does 10:1 extract mean?

Ten parts of raw mushroom are concentrated down into one part of finished extract. It is a measure of concentration — 1,000mg of a 10:1 extract is derived from a considerably larger quantity of the raw mushroom.

Is this fruiting body or mycelium?

Fruiting body — the mushroom itself. We do not use mycelium grown on grain, which is a common way of padding out the weight of cheaper Lion’s Mane products.

Why liquid rather than capsules?

A tincture is quicker to take, easier to adjust, and does not involve swallowing several large capsules a day. It also mixes straight into coffee, which is where a lot of people naturally slot it into their morning.

Can I put it in a hot drink?

Yes. Stirring the drops into coffee or tea is one of the most common ways people take it.

Is it suitable for vegans?

Yes. Every Black Hawk tincture is vegan friendly, non-GMO and alcohol free.
